Project Eternity First Screenshot !

Project Eternity’s team of crazed environment artists have been working hard on developing our first environment for the game. Early on in the Kickstarter campaign, we told you that we wanted to make maps the Infinity Engine way. That is, we wanted to build 3D levels, render them out as 2D images, and then have our artists paint in beautiful details, highlights, and color-tweaks before they went into the game. Looking back at the levels some of us worked on for Icewind Dale, we were still thrilled with the quality that we could achieve with this approach. For Project Eternity, we’re using 10 years of improvements in rendering technology and hardware to get the job done, but we still love what we can do the “old-fashioned” way. We hope you share our enthusiasm.

Score by Renowned Composer Grant Kirkhope & Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Released by Sumthing Else Music Works on Same Day as Innovative Video Game

New York – January 12th, 2012 – Marking the next step in the evolution of video game soundtracks, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning™ Original Soundtrack is scheduled for release on February 7, 2012-the same day that the highly anticipated fantasy role-playing video game becomes available. Featuring original music composed by renowned composer Grant Kirkhope, the soundtrack will be distributed through Sumthing Else Music Works-the leading video game music company created by famed musician/producer Nile Rodgers-and will be released through a licensing relationship between 38 Studios LLC and Big Huge Games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning™ Original Soundtrack will be available at all physical and online retail outlets, and through digital download at http://www.sumthingdigital.com, Amazon MP3, iTunes® and other digital music sites.

Set in an entirely new universe crafted by New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is brought to life visually through the trademark visceral style of renowned artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. With a sprawling explorable world and deep RPG gameplay at its core, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning adds a new level of intense action combat to the genre, and a one-of-a-kind advancement system as players unfold and evolve their destiny through constant character customization. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is being created under the leadership of Ken Rolston, lead designer of the critically acclaimed open-world RPGs Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Renowned video game composer Grant Kirkhope (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Viva Pinata) and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra bring the magical world of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning to life with an original dark fantasy score. The cutting-edge soundtrack is just the latest release from Sumthing Else Music Works, founded in 1998 by world-renowned songwriter, musician and record producer Nile Rodgers. Rodgers’ philosophy of artist-driven music, coupled with his appreciation of new concepts and products, has made Sumthing Else a leader in the relatively new genre of video game soundtracks. “Reckoning was a huge undertaking, as I knew from the start the scale of the game was going to be BIIIIIIIG!,” said Kirkhope. “I wanted to make sure it was strong thematically so that the player could make real associations with characters and places; I’ve always tried to do this with all the games I’ve worked on. There’s a good two and a half hours’ worth of full orchestral score in Reckoning ranging from huge boss fights to smaller ensemble pieces for dungeons and cities. I wanted the score to have a dark fairytale kind of feel that was full of magic and danger at every turn just like the game. The team here at Big Huge Games created such a beautiful looking world that it was such a pleasure to score!”

Developed by 38 Studios subsidiary Big Huge Games in Baltimore and 38 Studios in Providence, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will be available on February 7, 2012 in North America and on February 10, 2012 in Europe on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. Few role-playing franchises can claim a pedigree quite as extensive as that of The Elder Scrolls. Spanning nearly 20 years, the series has seen multiple Game of the Year awards, and with good reason. Each installment builds upon the last, creating a vast open-world experience unlike any other. The series’ hallmark has been the ability to lose yourself within the lore and landscape for endless hours. Having successfully completed nearly 70 hours of gameplay, I am nowhere near finished with this game, so we present a mid-way point review for your enjoyment. Please look for our Skyrim Notes tomorrow, which will include more details on skills, crafting, and other minutia that didn’t quite fit here. If you’re a fellow ES nut and just want to Cut to the Chase, feel free to do so.

Building upon the rich, established lore, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim transports players to the frozen northern lands of Tamriel. Set two hundred years after the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the world of Tamriel is in a period of unrest, and events that could change the course of the world are unfolding in Skyrim. The game begins with the familiar intro-by-way-of-dungeon, that allows your to create your character and get a feel for what is going on in the world. It appears Skyrim is on the cusp of civil war as the Nordic Stormcloaks seek to remove the Imperial forces from their land. Of course, the appearance of dragons — long thought extinct in Tamriel — has raised the stakes.

Baldur's Gate (1998), a computer role-playing ...

Image via Wikipedia

Classic role-playing-game, Baldur’s Gate, has topped a poll of some of the leading figures in the gaming industry, to be named WGE’s No.1 game of all-time.

The World Gaming Executives network sought the views of more than 1000 developers and gaming executives for the poll, the results of which are published in the first ever edition of the WGE Magazine, which is available for digital download from worldgamingexecutives.com.

The Baldur’s Gate series was developed by Canadian developers Bioware and was first released in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. The game was a critical and financial success on release and is credited by many as reviving the RPG genre in gaming. As well as spawning three further Baldur’s Gate titles, the game set the standard for many other productions which used the advanced Dungeons and Dragons rules in video games.

Baldur’s Gate beat several other RPGs and gaming classics to top the poll, which also included many contemporary classics of the modern gaming era including the recently released Batman Arkham Asylum.

Speaking about the list, freelance design consultant and former UI Director of Bizarre Creations, Gary Hall said: “The list is a little surprising, but I loved playing almost all of these games. ‘Curse of Monkey Island’ was one of the major contributing factors to my wanting to make games for a living. Its storytelling and puzzles were second to none. Tomb Raider is also on the list, a game which, as far as I am concerned, rewrote the rules for game development.”

WGE Director John Armstrong said: “Many of the developers we polled got all misty-eyed as they thought back to the games of their youth, games which clearly influenced them into wanting to make a career in the gaming industry.

“These are the games which the developers of today grew up with and I think that’s why games such as Baldur’s Gate featured so largely in the voting.

“We expected that there would be quite a few contemporary titles on the list, people clearly enjoying the current games on the market. It’ll be interesting to see if those titles stand the test of time and feature on a similar poll in 20 years time.”

The World Gaming Executives network is where game industry professionals exchange ideas, educate, advocate and create business opportunities. With over 30,000 followers World Gaming Executives is the number one resource for game developer contacts, events, news & jobs.

Burbank, Calif., October 21, 2011 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and CD Projekt RED, developers of the blockbuster Witcher franchise of video games, announced a distribution agreement for the upcoming Xbox 360 release of “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” in North America.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will distribute “The Witcher 2” on Xbox 360, contributing sales and marketing resources.

The console version of “The Witcher 2” is an adaptation of the hit RPG fantasy game on PC.
“We have added significant enhancements to the Xbox 360 version of ‘The Witcher 2,’ going far beyond simply editing the code to run on a new platform. Thanks to one of the world’s newest game engines, the RED Engine, it will be one of the best-looking games ever released on Xbox 360,” said Adam Kiciński, President, CD Projekt RED.

The story is dedicated to mature players and offers over 40 hours of non-linear gameplay. Starting from four possible beginnings, “The Witcher 2” leads players through different gameplay paths to 16 different endings making it one of the most non-linear and complex storylines ever brought to the console market.

Additionally, the game features a dynamic combat system, which fuses battles with RPG mechanics, giving access to a vast array of different fighting tactics.

“We are very pleased to partner with CD Projekt RED to bring ‘The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings’ to consoles in the United States, Canada and Mexico,” said Kevin Kebodeaux, Senior Vice President, Sales Americas, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Witcher is a AAA franchise that fits well with our strategic distribution of high quality games, making it a great addition to our 2012 line-up in North America.”

“We are sure that this partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with its strong position in the entertainment sector and particularly in the video and games distribution market in North America, will help us to achieve even bigger success in the most important market for Xbox 360 games. This is also a big distinction for us, that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recognizes ‘The Witcher 2’ as a rare example of a game with world-class production values, which merges a very ambitious and complex approach with big commercial potential,” said Adam Kiciński.

Release of “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” on Xbox 360 is expected in Q1 2012. More information about the project can be found here: www.thewitcher.com.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s Map Revealed

Skyrim Map

Attendees of the recent Igromir gaming show in Moscow got a first-glimpse of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s massive worldmap (pictured above). Looking closely at the map, you can pick out the game’s major cities and their corresponding coats of arms.

With just one more month to go until the 11/11/11 release date, there’s not much longer to wait for Bethesda‘s epic RPG. Until then, you can map out the route you want to take across the game’s fictional plains, maybe write some fanfic, and draw some cool dragon and krakens on the existing map so that it looks even cooler.
