Introduction

At the inaugural AMD Fusion Developer Summit in June, 2011, Eric Demers and Rick Bergman looked Rage3D in the eye and promised the next generation of Radeon GPUs would launch at the end of 2011. Two of those three are with us as we move deep into the Yuletide season, with Rick Bergman now CEO of Synaptics, Inc. Before his watch ended, AMD’s graphics group put the final touches to their third generation DirectX 11 architecture, which is also one of many firsts – first to DirectX 11.1; first to 28nm process technology; first to over 4Bn transistors; first to feature some genuinely good power saving technology; and the first AMD single GPU product to return to the huge, monolithic expensive die price point of over $500USD – well over, in fact, at $549USD, but still at a die size smaller than the HD 6970 Cayman or HD 5870 Cypress chips.

Under the Southern Islands codename, the GPU core is known as Tahiti XT. The board sold by AMD’s Add-in Board (AIB) partners like ASUS, Sapphire, MSI et al, is known as the AMD Radeon HD 7970.

AMD Dual-GPU HD 7990 could Arrive March 2012

First January, but now its March. It’s pretty save to state that the Radeon HD 7900 series cards will be released early 2012, maybe even January. However we have not even crossed that point yet already we are seeing rumors that the dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990 would be launched in March, which would be CeBIT time.

 

The 7990 is based on the Tahiti GPU which would be two Radeon HD 7970 or HD 7950 cores.

 

The Radeon HD 7990 will most probably also use the new liquid chamber cooling solution that AMD said previously that it will be included in the HD 7970 and HD 7950 reference designs.

 

According to the Sunnyvale-based chip maker, this brings a series of improvements over the old vapor chamber technology, while also being easier to manufacture. Radeon HD 7900-series cards use AMD’s Next Generation Core (NGC) architecture that was designed to offer improved performance and functionality in GPGPU environment.

 

Before coming out with the dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990, AMD will release not just the HD 7970 and HD 7950, but also a series of mid-range models manufactured using TSMC’s 28nm production node.

 

These will feature the VLIW4 (very-long instruction word) architecture introduced with the Radeon HD 6900-series GPUs.

 

Nvidia’s next-generation graphics cores, code-name Kepler, which are built using the same 28nm TSMC fabrication node, will also arrive in 2012 and will be officially announced in December of this year, according to a recent report.

 

Sapphire unveils new Radeon HD 6970 with dual fans AND dual BIOS

Sapphire has added a new card to its Radeon HD 6900 series, the HD 6970.

The new Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 clocked at 800MHz and features 2GB of GDDR5 RAM clocked at 1,375MHz (5,500MHz effective), a dual fan cooler pack with two 90mm thin impeller fans (better airflow at lower RPM) and dual BIOS so users have the choice between quiet running and performance.

According to Sapphire, this card will be priced at the same point as its standard HD 6970 graphics card.

The dual BIOS feature is interesting:

With the Dual BIOs set to the standard position, the Dual fans keep this model quiet and up to 25% cooler than the standard model even under load conditions. With the BIOS switched to the performance setting, the core voltage of the GPU is raised to 1.2V, the fan speed is set to a high performance profile and the powertune adjustment for overclocking is raised to 50% allowing the user to maximise performance of the card by increasing clock speeds either with AMD Overdrive or with SAPPHIRE TriXX up to a ceiling of 1500MHz core, 2000MHz memory.

AMD 28nm Radeon HD 7000 GPUs Mass Production

 

 

Guru3D.com ImageAMD is slowly but steadily to release of its next-generation Radeon HD 7000 graphics cards as reports suggest the company has already started mass production of these GPUs which are fabricated using TSMC advanced 28nm technology.

 

The official launch of these chips is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2012, according to DigiTimes, the same source that revealed the graphics cores have entered mass production.

 

If this report turns out to be true, then AMD won’t be able to deliver on its promise of releasing the first Southern Islands parts by the end of this year.

 

The main problem faced by the Sunnyvale-based chip maker seems to be TSMC’s inability to improve the yields of its 28nm fabrication process.

 

Furthermore, the foundry just started volume production of chips based on the 28nm node at the start of this week.

 

From the leaks that made it to the Web in the last couple of months, we know that AMD’s upcoming Radeon HD 7000 graphics card series will be comprised of low- and mid-range solutions based on the VLIW4 architecture introduced with the Radeon HD 6900 GPU series as well as from high-end solutions in the HD 7900 range.

 

The latter series will use the Next Generation Core (NGC) architecture that we have covered in a series of previous articles. The key aspect of this architecture is that it will improve the performance and functionality of GPGPU computing.

 

In addition to the new architecture, AMD has reveled a couple of weeks ago, that Tahiti GPUs will use a new cooling system that replaces the usual vapor chambers with a more advanced technology based on a liquid chamber design.
